Keep Your Home Fresh: Odour Management

When you’re coming home after a long day of work, the last thing you need is to be hit by unpleasant odours and smells in your house.

In order to keep your home fresh, let’s look at some of the causes and remedies for household odours, after all there are many benefits to a clean home besides its looks and aesthetics.

1. Find Out What Causes Household Odours

When it comes to household odours, there are a couple of usual suspects.

Bins are a common source of foul odours, either because the contents are pungent or the rubbish needs to be taken out.

Spoiled foods in your fridge, pantry, bread bins, and fruit bowls can be another offender.

If you have pets, it’s likely that their fur, toys, beds, could be carrying unpleasant scents, or that they’ve left a little accident somewhere…

Mould and mildew can also build up, especially in humid or poorly ventilated spaces that don’t get much sun or airflow.

2. Learn How to Eliminate Household Odours

If there’s a bit of a smell hanging around your house, here are some go-to tips for finding the source and eliminating odours:

Dust Busting: Routine Cleaning Practices to Minimise Dust Accumulation

Minimising dust accumulation requires a combination of regular cleaning and preventative measures. Cleaning and dusting is especially important if someone in your home suffers from allergies, if this is the case you may need more cleaning tips for allergy sufferers.

1. Bust the Hidden Dust in your Home

It’s important to dust and vacuum all rooms and surfaces on a regular basis, taking care to get into corners, clean underneath furniture, and reach high-up places.

Because fabrics and upholstery can store a lot of dust, make sure you vacuum your furniture and machine wash any removable covers where possible.

You’ll be surprised at how much dust and dirt comes out!

Curtains, bedsheets, mattresses, throw pillows, and pet beds also store a tonne of hidden dust, so it’s a good idea to clean these on a monthly basis – especially if you suffer from allergies.

2. How to Stop Dust Entering Your Home

You can always use air purifiers with HEPA filters to continually remove dust from the air.

To avoid dust entering the home in the first place, use doormats at each entrance and encourage guests to remove their shoes. This will stop dust and dirt being tracked through your house.

Also make sure any gaps, cracks, and openings in the windows, doors, and walls are sealed properly – lots of dust can sneak in this way!

It’s relatively easy to DIY, or hire a handyman for a professional touch.

Mould Prevention: Essential Tips for Keeping Humidity-Prone Areas Clean

If you have humid or poorly-ventilated areas in your home, it’s crucial to keep your eyes peeled for signs of mould.

Basements, dark rooms, lots of plants, heating, condensation, and many other factors can create the perfect breeding ground mould.

Not only is it unclean and unsightly, but mould can permanently damage the building and cause illness and sickness in humans and pets.

Prevent Mould Growing in Your Home

Preventing and treating mould requires a proactive approach.

Your first priority is to reduce humidity levels in the air. You can fix any leaks in your home, reduce the amount of indoor plants (which release moisture into the air), but a dehumidifier is the most efficient method.

You’ll also need to improve ventilation by opening windows, turning on exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom, and using air conditioning where possible.

Take care to keep surfaces dry, by wiping down counters and sinks with a microfibre cloth and drying your floor after showering, mopping, or spilling.

How to Kill and Treat Mould to Keep Your Home Fresh

And if mould is already growing, then killing it early on is crucial.

Use a specialised mould cleaner, or you can use household products like vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, or borax.

These are all quite harsh products, so it’s a good idea to wear gloves and a face mask – this will protect you from cleaning fumes and from breathing in any mould spores.

You’ll need to continually clean the affected area to stop the mould from coming back, so be patient. Be sure to monitor the mould growth and re-treat as soon as you see signs of it coming back!
