We know what you’re probably thinking…

I’m supposed to be cleaning my washing machine?!!

Well, yes. You should clean your washing machine, and we’re here to tell you why it’s important, and how to go about cleaning a washing machine.

Do I really need to clean my washing machine?

Cleaning your washing machine is important for many reasons.

First, it removes any dirt, grime, and soap scum residue that has built up over time. This can cause your clothes to become discolored or wear out more quickly. Additionally, it prevents mold and mildew from growing in your machine, which can lead to serious health problems.

Washing machines are one of the most commonly used appliances in the home. Over time, they can become dirty and smelly. This can be a result of leaving wet clothes in the machine, not cleaning the machine itself on a regular basis, or using it to wash items that are particularly dirty or greasy.

If your washing machine is starting to smell, it’s important to clean it as soon as possible. Otherwise, the bad odor could transfer to your clothes.

Cleaning your machine also helps to keep it running efficiently. Over time, dirt and grime can build up in the pipes and hoses, causing your machine to use more water and energy. By cleaning your machine regularly, you can help it to run more efficiently and save money on your utility bills.

How often should I clean my washing machine?

Ideally, you should clean your washing machine once a month. However, if you don’t use your machine very often, you may be able to get away with cleaning it every two or three months.

If you have a front-loading machine, you may need to clean it more often, as these types of machines are more susceptible to mold and mildew, which can cause your washing machine (and your laundry!) to have a musty smell.

Cleaning your washing machine is easy!

Whether you’ve got a top-loading washing machine or a front load washer, there are a few different ways that you can clean your washing machine.

What to clean a washing machine with?

You can use a commercial cleaning product or natural cleaning products: like white vinegar, or baking soda. Each of these methods will help to remove dirt, grime, and residue from your machine.

To clean your washing machine with commercial cleaning products, simply follow the instructions on the label. Most products will require you to run an empty cycle with the cleaning solution.

To clean your machine with white vinegar, add one cup of white vinegar to the detergent compartment of your machine. Run an empty cycle with hot water.

To clean your machine with baking soda, add one cup of baking soda to the detergent compartment of your machine. Run an empty cycle with hot water.

1. Empty the washer

Empty out the drum of the front loader and remove any attachments, like the detergent drawer and fabric softener dispenser.

2. Wipe it down

Give both sides a wipe down using three-quarters of a cup (or less) chlorine bleach mixed in one-gallon of water, as well as some dish soap or laundry detergent if necessary for tough stains. Use a soft cloth or sponge to avoid scratching.

3. Clean the gasket

Wipe the gasket (the seal between the tub and door) down with a damp cloth, making sure to get in all the nooks and crannies.

4. Rinse and repeat

Run an empty cycle on hot to rinse out the bleach and soap. For a more deep clean, once a year run an empty cycle with two cups of baking soda mixed in with the hot water.

Cleaning a top-loading washing machine is a bit different than cleaning a front-loading machine, but is just as easy.

1. Fill ‘er up

Fill the washing machine with hot water, as if you’re doing a load of laundry. Make sure it’s empty before filling, of course!

2. Add the cleaning solution

To the hot water, add one cup of vinegar and one cup of baking soda.

3. Let it soak

Let the mixture soak in the machine for about an hour. Feel free to let the cleaning mixture soak for a bit longer if needed.

4. Wash it out

After an hour has passed, turn on the washing machine and let it go through a full cycle. Once finished, be sure to leave the door open to air it out.

5. Repeat as necessary

If your machine is still looking dirty, repeat steps 2-5 until it’s clean.

How to clean a washing machine with vinegar

Cleaning your washing machine with vinegar is a great way to remove any build-up of dirt or grime and a great way to clean a smelly washing machine. Vinegar is a natural disinfectant and will help to remove any bad smells from your machine.

  • To clean your washing machine with vinegar, start by adding one cup of vinegar to the washing machine.
  • Run the machine on a empty cycle with hot water to allow the vinegar to circulate throughout the machine.
  • Once the cycle is finished, open up the washing machine and let it air out for a few minutes.
  • Wipe down the inside of the machine with a soft cloth to remove any dirt or grime that has been loosened by the vinegar.
  • Run another empty cycle with hot water to rinse out the vinegar.

Once the cycle is finished, your washing machine should be clean and free of any dirt or grime.

How to clean a washing machine filter

Cleaning your washing machine filter is an important part of maintaining your machine. Depending on the type of washing machine you have, the location of the filter will vary.

For top-loading washing machines, the filter is usually located under the agitator in the center of the machine. For front-loading washing machines, the filter is usually located behind the lower kickplate panel in front of the machine.

To clean your washing machine filter, start by removing it from the machine. Most filters can be easily removed by unscrewing a few screws or pulling it out.

Once you have removed the filter, rinse it off with some warm water to remove any dirt or debris that may be caught in it. If the filter is very dirty, you may need to soak it in some warm water and dish soap to remove all the dirt.

Once the filter is clean, dry it off and put it back in the washing machine. Be sure to screw it in tightly so that it doesn’t come loose during a cycle.

Maintaining a clean washing machine

Once you have done all the work to clean your washing machine, it’s important to properly maintain it! Adding a quick cleaning of your washing machine to your routine house cleaning checklist is a great way to maximize the use of your washing machine and keep it working like-new.

Be sure to leave the door open after each use, so that the machine can air out. Closing the door of the washing machine too soon after a cleaning cycle can lead to mold and mildew growth, and cause bad smells in your washing machine.

Additionally, don’t leave wet clothes in the machine for too long, as this can lead to mold and mildew growth on your clothes and in your washer as well.

Wipe down the exterior of your machine on a regular basis, using a soft cloth and some soapy water. This will help to remove any dirt or grime that has built up on the outside of the machine.

If you have a front-loading machine, be sure to wipe down and regularly clean the rubber seals on a regular basis. This will help to prevent mold and mildew growth and keep your washing machine smelling fresh and running like new.
